Wide and flat camping spot just outside Rome, with trains nearby but not a lot of power.
Camper Club Mira Lago Roma is a nice, secure camping spot in Lunghezza, just outside Rome. The aire itself is a large rectangular field, so there is suitable space to set up any camper. At the back of the field there are barbecue spots, and a large entertainments tent.
There are also hot showers, a toilet and washing facilities, all available for a small fee. The owners of the site are very helpful and happy to shuttle people to and from the local train station.
There are also a couple of small lakes next to the site, which can be fished – though we didn’t witness anyone catch any fish despite there being plenty in there!
When driving in, don’t be put off by the state of the road or the vehicle dismantlers/repairers on either side of the road. At the far end, there is a decent gate which leads down to the aire and a large camper storage area, which we used to empty our tanks before leaving.
It does take quite some time to get into Rome, the train takes between 20 & 30 minutes to reach Tiburtina, from where you then must take the Metro to reach your appropriate destination. Overall it took about 1.5 hours to reach the historical centre of Rome.
The low electrical power might be a problem for some, and the WiFi was a little patchy – sometimes working very well, sometimes crawling along. Being Vodafone FON, some people will be able to use it for free, others (like us) have to pay a reasonable usage fee. At the weekend especially, the entertainment tent was host to several parties, so it was noisy during the day and into the early evening – but the nights were quiet and nice.
